He had told the airline he'd extend by a day before he'd told his mother. This felt, in retrospect, like the wrong order of operations — but his mother, when he finally mentioned it over breakfast Tuesday morning, simply nodded and said, "I'll make *kothimbir vadi* tonight," as though this had been the plan all along, as though mothers possess some early-warning system that renders announcements redundant.
